5 reasons to eat dark chocolate

Who wouldn't like chocolate? We usually feel a little guilty about eating it because chocolate has a label of something very unhealthy. On the contrary, chocolate can be said to be a symbol of happiness. This is because the substances contained in it raise the level of the serotonin hormone, which is called the hormone of happiness.

However, it is worth mentioning that we are not talking about "classic" chocolate, which is more than 2/3 white sugar and other substances are skimmed milk powder, hardened vegetable fat and other chemical substances. I mean dark chocolate in which there is no or just a minimum amount of milk and white sugar added. The highest quality chocolate has a cocoa content between 70-99%. So here are five reasons to eat dark chocolate:

1.) Contains high levels of antioxidants and minerals

Did you know that chocolate (or cocoa beans) have some of the highest levels of antioxidants from all foods? Antioxidants are substances that protect our body against so-called oxidative stress. It is a phenomenon where, due to free radicals, various structures in our organism are damaged. Normally, the antioxidants and free radicals in our body are balanced. Chocolate also contains a wide range of minerals such as iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, fiber, phosphorus, zinc and selenium.

2.) Reduces stress

As already mentioned, chocolate increases the values of the neurotransmitter (the transmitter of brain impulses) of serotonin, which acts as a natural antidepressant and reduces stress factors. Studies conducted by Swiss scientists have shown that the chemical composition of dark chocolate really plays a key role in reducing stress levels in people who are exposed to great psychological stress. The study states that a regular dose of 40 grams of dark chocolate over two weeks can be shown to reduce stress hormones. If you want to try this, I recommend chocolate with a minimum cocoa content of 85%.

3.) Reduces LDL cholesterol

The third reason to eat dark chocolate is that cocoa beans reduce the level of the "bad" LDL cholesterol, which promotes the formation of a substance in the body that can, under some circumstances clog the inner walls of the arteries and veins. At the same time, dark chocolate can increase the levels of the "good" HDL cholesterol. Proper cholesterol balance can significantly reduce the risk of cardiac arrest and heart diseases.

4.) Encourages the mind

A study carried out at the University of Nottingham shows that eating dark chocolate can increase blood flow to the brain for up to three hours. Cocoa can also help to improve concentration, reduce response time and improve memory. You can definitely try this while studying for some exam and realize that this is another reason to eat dark chocolate.

5.) It is an excellent healthy food

My clients often doubt when I recommend eating dark chocolate (75-99% cocoa). They still have the word "chocolate" related with something unhealthy. However, speaking of dark chocolate, you certainly do not have to feel guilty. On the contrary, it is a very beneficial food with several health benefits. Now you can consume it knowing that you are doing a great service to your body! Of course, be careful not to exaggerate. Read the ingredients label thoroughly. Avoid consuming those chocolates that contain a high percentage of sugar or at least reduce their consumption.

Remember: the higher the percentage of cocoa is, the lower the percentage of sugar is. And of course the best experience with any food is the one you make on your own body.

Have you ever tried chocolate with 99% of cocoa?  It is just awesome!
